Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Hani collects, uses, protects, and shares information when learners use our Chinese learning platform, including AI-powered coaching, flashcards, mock exams, and saved learning history.

1. Who we are

Hani provides an EdTech platform for Chinese learning, with vocabulary, grammar, flashcards, mock exams, roleplay, AI coaching, and personalized study recommendations. In this policy, "Hani", "we", "us", and "our" refer to Hani.

This policy applies to our websites, applications, APIs, emails, and related services. It does not apply to third-party websites or services that we do not control.

2. Information we collect

Account information: name, email address, password authentication data, OAuth identifiers if you sign in with a third-party provider, account role, language preference, onboarding answers, and profile settings.

Learning information: vocabulary saved to decks, flashcard answers, spaced repetition status, pronunciation and listening practice results, grammar progress, mock exam attempts, bookmarks, mistakes, scores, streaks, study time, and other learning history.

AI interaction data: prompts, roleplay messages, coach requests, generated recommendations, corrections, feedback, and conversation metadata needed to operate AI-powered learning features.

Technical information: device and browser type, IP address, approximate location inferred from IP, cookies, session identifiers, access and refresh token metadata, log data, diagnostic events, and security audit records.

Payment information: if paid plans are offered, billing details are handled by our payment processor. We may receive subscription status, plan type, renewal dates, invoices, and limited payment metadata, but we do not store full card numbers.

3. How we use information

We use information to create and secure accounts, authenticate sessions, deliver the product, save progress, sync learning history, generate dashboards, and provide customer support.

We use learning and analytics data to personalize lessons, order reviews, recommend next actions, evaluate performance, detect weak areas, and improve educational outcomes.

We use AI interaction data to provide coaching, conversation practice, corrections, explanations, and personalized study plans. AI outputs may be generated by third-party model providers acting on our behalf.

We use technical and security data to prevent abuse, investigate suspicious activity, debug errors, measure reliability, enforce rate limits, and protect learners and the service.

We may use aggregated or de-identified data to improve curriculum quality, model prompts, product analytics, and research insights. We do not use aggregated or de-identified data to identify individual learners.

4. AI features and learner control

AI coaching and recommendations are designed to support learning, not to make high-stakes educational, employment, immigration, medical, legal, or financial decisions.

Learners should avoid submitting sensitive personal information in AI chats or roleplay messages. We may review AI interactions when needed for safety, quality, abuse prevention, support, or debugging.

Personalized recommendations may be based on your study history, accuracy, streaks, saved words, mock exam performance, roleplay activity, and other in-product behavior.

5. Cookies and authentication

We use cookies and similar technologies for authentication, session continuity, security, localization, and product analytics. For example, refresh tokens may be stored in secure HTTP-only cookies, while access tokens are used to authorize API requests.

Some cookies are necessary for the service to work. Where required by law, we will request consent for non-essential cookies or provide controls to manage them.

6. How we share information

We share information with service providers that help us operate the platform, such as cloud hosting, databases, analytics, email delivery, payment processing, customer support tools, authentication providers, and AI model providers.

We may disclose information if required by law, legal process, safety obligations, or to protect the rights, property, and security of Hani, our learners, or the public.

If Hani is involved in a merger, financing, acquisition, reorganization, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to appropriate safeguards.

We do not sell personal information in the ordinary meaning of selling a learner list to advertisers.

7. User-generated content

User-generated content may include roleplay messages, AI chat prompts, deck names, notes, reported content, mock exam answers, and support messages.

You are responsible for the content you submit. We may remove, restrict, or review content that violates our Terms of Service, harms other users, compromises security, or creates legal risk.

8. Security

We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information, including encrypted transport, authentication controls, limited access, logging, and abuse monitoring.

No online service can guarantee perfect security. You should use a strong password, keep account credentials confidential, and notify us promptly if you suspect unauthorized access.

9. Data retention

We retain account information, learning history, subscriptions, and security logs for as long as needed to provide the service, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, prevent abuse, and maintain accurate records.

If you delete your account or request deletion, we will delete or de-identify personal information unless retention is required for security, legal, tax, accounting, backup, fraud prevention, or legitimate business purposes.

Backups and logs may persist for a limited period before routine deletion.

10. Your privacy choices

Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, export, restrict, or object to certain processing of your personal information.

You can update some account information in product settings. For requests that are not available in the product, contact us using the support email below.

You may unsubscribe from non-transactional emails. We may still send service, security, billing, and account notices.

11. Children and students

Hani is intended for learners who can lawfully create an account or use the service with appropriate consent. If we learn that we collected personal information from a child without required consent, we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

If Hani is used by schools or organizations, additional agreements may apply to student data, administrator access, retention, and educational compliance requirements.

12. International data transfers

We and our service providers may process information in countries other than your own. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for cross-border transfers.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as the product, laws, or business practices change. If changes are material, we will provide reasonable notice through the service, email, or another appropriate channel.
